Heavyweight duo is digging in for a long takeover tussle

Marius Kloppers, chief executive of BHP Billiton, yesterday found himself back at square one in his campaign to take over rival mining group Rio Tinto.

Hours after raising his takeover offer for Rio by 13 per cent to $147bn, his target rejected the bid, saying it "still fails to recognise the underlying value of Rio Tinto's quality assets and prospects".
