John McCain on Wednesday insisted his surprise decision to suspend campaigning and return to Washington to focus on the financial crisis had nothing to do with presidential politics.

“It’s time for both parties to come together to solve this problem,” he said. “We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved.”
