Once-pristine Southwest hit with ‘black eye’

Southwest Airlines, whose record for on-time performance, customer service and profitability secured the carrier’s place in history as the biggest success story of a deregulated aviation industry, has become the unlikely catalyst for a US government crackdown on safety.

A congressional investigation found that Federal Aviation Administration officials ignored their inspectors’ concerns in allowing Southwest to keep aircraft in service that were not in compliance with the regulator’s airworthiness directives.
