Hawkish ECB drives euro to new high

The euro broke through $1.60 against the dollar for the first time yesterday, hitting a fresh high as hawkish comments from the European Central Bank boosted the single currency.

Traders said they saw strong demand for the euro from Asian sovereign institutions after Yves Mersch, a member of the ECB's governing council, said the central bank might revise its inflation target upwards.
