Pamela Pipes, a New Orleans resident who fled to Houston, captured the mood surrounding hurricane Gustav yesterday when she said that a friend left behind had just e-mailed her with news. Although the city had lost power, there appeared to be no flooding.

By mid-afternoon on Sunday, New Orleans appeared to have escaped the worst of hurricane Gustav.
