Freedom, at a price

The European Union deserves credit for its role in securing the release yesterday of the six Bulgarian medical workers from their Libyan jail.

It is a real success for the union’s common foreign policy and one that was earned only by years of gruelling effort and negotiation. It puts right a serious miscarriage of justice. The Bulgarians were convicted of deliberately infecting 438 children in their care with the Aids virus. The six said they were tortured to confess. Foreign experts said the infection was probably caused by poor hospital hygiene.
