Blunt Greenspan says deficit unsustainable

Alan Greenspan, chairman of the Federal Reserve, did not mince his words when talking about the US current account deficit at a banking conference in Frankfurt on Friday.

The Fed chairman was unusually blunt. The US current account deficit, he said, was unsustainable. "Net claims against residents of the United States cannot continue to increase forever in international portfolios at their recent pace.
