The deepest recession for decades might not seem the most promising time for UK companies to be flexing their muscles in emerging economies. Even so, few would argue against the idea that over the next 20 years or so, growth prospects in regions such as south-east Asia, eastern Europe, the Middle East and Latin America look extremely promising, whatever problems the world economy may face in the short term as a result of the financial crisis.
On this basis, there is a long list of UK companies setting out expansion strategies in the emerging regions – even though most of them are well aware that such places will be far from immune from the difficulties facing the global economy as the effects of the credit crunch worsen.
