Schools get time to pass ‘public benefit’ test

Private school heads were on Wednesday promised up to five years’ breathing space if they failed to meet a tough new charitable test proving they were doing enough to help poor people.

The period will give schools time to reorganise their finances and fundraising if they fail the Charity Commission’s requirement that they provide sufficient “public benefit” by giving bursaries to families who cannot afford the fees and helping children at state schools.
