The problem with statistics

The word "competitiveness" trips off the tongue easily. It is the goal of companies, their investors and politicians. In Europe, in particular, there is a broad agenda to make the continent's businesses more competitive with rivals in the US and Asia. José Manuel Barroso has made it his central task as European Commission president.

So what is the most competitive European company? If the question is easy to state, the answer is altogether harder to establish.
