Pound nears $2 as inflation pressures rise

Sterling closed in on the $2 mark on Monday, hitting a 14½-year high as inflationary pressures mounted in the UK and raised expectations of further near-term interest rate increases.

The pound jumped to $1.9939, its highest level against the US currency since September 1992, just before it was ejected from the European exchange rate mechanism on Black Wednesday.
