John Prescott’s traditional end-of-conference rant as deputy party leader on Thursday contained two novelties. There was an apology to the party for his personal behaviour: “I let myself down. I let you down. So, conference, I just want to say sorry.”
Then, less surprisingly, came his announcement that this rant would mark the end of an era. This time next year he, like his leader, will be gone.
