Soren Jessen-Petersen, the head of the United Nations mission administering Kosovo, is to step down before the most critical stage of talks on the province's future status.
After nearly two years as the UN special representative leading the UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo, Mr Jessen-Petersen announced he would depart at the end of the month. His statement was made amid rising pressure from ethnic-Albanian separatists for complete independence.
