The chief executive of Ultra Electronics, the defence manufacturer at the centre of takeover speculation, has said he is eager for the company to remain independent.

After reporting a 16 per cent rise in underlying annual profits, Douglas Caster said no firm offers had been forthcoming but any bid would need to be "extremely compelling".
