Sometimes release can be a burden

People approaching retirement with a pension shortfall, who need additional income or a cash lump sum, are being deterred from using home equity-release schemes by their perceived risks and costs.

Latest figures show that sales of the schemes - which enable over-55s to unlock value from their home without having to sell - were down 16 per cent in the year to date, compared with the same period in 2007.
