Olympics cloud analysis of China data

The Olympics may have been a propaganda triumph for China but the games have made it much harder to work out what is happening in the Chinese economy at a time of concern about a possible sharp slowdown.

The government released figures on Friday that showed a slump in the growth of industrial production and an increase in retail spending, yet both figures could have been heavily influenced by the Olympics.
