Campaign gets personal as Obama chooses

The US presidential campaign on Friday continued its slide into personal nastiness amid changing minute-by-minute speculation over the timing and identity of Barack Obama’s running- mate selection.

The Obama campaign, which has said it will announce his vice-presidential choice sometime before he gives a set piece address on Saturday in Springfield, Illinois, where he launched his candidacy, was plagued on Friday by fake text messages announcing joke selections.
