Hominid springs surprise after 4m years

Before Lucy came Ardi. Ardi, who lived in Ethiopian woodlands 4.4m years ago, was unveiled on Thursday in a series of palaeontology papers in the journal Science.

She is the oldest hominid fossil discovered so far and has enough surviving bones to make reasonable deductions about her behaviour.
