Calls for the resignation of Antonio Palocci, Brazil's finance minister, are likely to increase this week after evidence emerged that he misled a congressional in-quiry into a corruption scandal surrounding the government since May last year.

Opposition leaders have refrained from attacking Mr Palocci during most of the scandal because they support his orthodox policies and have been unwilling to risk upsetting Brazil's hard-won economic stability.
