FTFM Impax is one of the veterans of environmentally sound investing, having been active in the area for 10 years. The company is one of the largest environmental fund managers in the UK, with more than £1bn (€1.3bn, $1.98bn) in assets under management.
Impax focuses mainly on high-growth companies in three environmental sectors: energy, water and waste. The field has expanded remarkably in the decade since the company started investing, says Ian Simm, chief executive: the company used to track fewer than 300 companies, but now employs 24 people to track about 1,000 companies around the world. Most of Impax’s employees are from a science or engineering background.
