Europe was hit by dramatic falls in gas supplies yesterday after Russia cut deliveries to Ukraine in a sharp escalation of the two countries' dispute over prices.

The European Union attacked the supply cuts as "completely unacceptable" and demanded an immediate resumption of supplies.
