UK house prices were flat in January and one per cent lower than they were in the previous quarter, according to the latest Halifax House Price Index, in yet another sign of a weakening market for homes.

The number of mortgage approvals in the last three months of 2007 shrank by 35 per cent, from the same period in 2006.
