Short View: Beware autumn bulls

September is traditionally the month when senior fund managers return refreshed from the beach, discover what their ebullient underlings have been doing and sell.

The S&P 500 index has fallen on average by 0.5 per cent every September since the second world war, the worst record of any month (only February joins it as a habitual poor performer).
