Daewoo defies gloom in shipbuilding

Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, the world’s third largest shipbuilder, said on Monday that fourth-quarter profits had surged more than fivefold to a record, defying predictions of gloom for the industry.

The shipbuilder joined its bigger Korean rivals Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries in reporting stronger earnings last year as the companies built value-added vessels at higher prices.
