Brazil warned over copyright violations

The US has threatened to withdraw trade preferences worth billions of dollars from Brazil if the South American country fails to improve enforcement of intellectual property rights.

"For Brazil to retain preferential access to the US market under our unilateral GSP [generalised system of preferences] programme we must ensure that intellectual property right enforcement is being strengthened," Peter Allgeier, deputy US trade representative, said before meeting Brazilian officials on Wednesday.
