It was not so much an outpouring as rapture. Last month more than 100,000 people, according to police estimates, lined the streets of Hong Kong as the Olympic torch finally arrived on Chinese soil.
For the Chinese government, it was a chance to hold a torch relay on its own terms after the flame’s international procession had become a target for pro-Tibet and human rights protesters, spoiling what was supposed to be a “journey of harmony”.
