Middle East operator eyes MTN

The prospect of a bidding war for MTN, a fast-growing mobile phone operator in emerging markets, increased on Monday after a leading Middle East telecoms group expressed interest in the Johannesburg-listed group.

Mohammed Hassan Omran, chairman of Etisalat, the acquisitive telecoms group based in Abu Dhabi, said: “We are always looking for expansion in Africa. We are evaluating MTN, among other companies.”
