Cairn Energy is on course to return about £700m ($1.4bn) to investors after setting the price range for the flotation of its Indian business, which implies a market capitalisation for the new company of between $6.3bn and $7.5bn.

The FTSE 100 company is hoping to sell Cairn India’s shares at Rs160-Rs190 each when it lists the business next month.
