White House mulls aid for carmakers

The White House on Monday said the financing arms of leading carmakers might be eligible for government assistance as talks continued on a possible merger between General Motors and Chrysler.

Underscoring the urgency facing big US automakers, General Motors on Monday said it might have to delay or cancel several new models as part of an increasingly urgent drive to hold down costs.
