Barroso backing for Ashton

José Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, expressed confidence in Baroness Cathy Ashton's fitness to take over as Europe's top trade official in spite of her thin experience in the field.

After consulting Gordon Brown, UK prime minister, yesterday, Mr Barroso wrote to fellow members of the Commission informing them of his decision to appoint the baroness as a replacement for the outgoing trade commissioner, Peter Mandelson.
