Blair quits after mayor makes job untenable

Sir Ian Blair, Britain's embattled chief policeman, reluctantly quit yesterday as a political battle broke out over the future of the Metropolitan Police force.

Sir Ian received tributes from the home secretary and the prime minister but said he was resigning after being told he should go by Boris Johnson, the Conservative mayor of London.
