European equities trading: a changing landscape

Since 2007 Europe’s equities trading landscape has been changed beyond recognition. The monopolies of exchanges such as the London Stock Exchange, Deutsche Börse and Euronext have ended and upstart platforms have emerged to take on the incumbents. Dark pools – trading platforms that allow large blocks of shares to be traded away from the “public” order book of an exchange – have proliferated, and new clearing houses have sprung up.
