Grim Australian figures point to rate cut

Australia’s central bank is forecast to cut its benchmark interest rate by half a percentage point on Tuesday in response to mounting evidence pointing to a marked cooling in the country’s economy.

The Reserve Bank of Australia has cut rates by 125 basis points since September in response to the turmoil in global financial markets. The government last month unveiled a A$10.4bn fiscal stimulus package to boost flagging consumer spending.
