Protective sheets have been wrapped around the classical pillars at the up-market Frankfurter Hof hotel in Germany’s financial capital as it undergoes a large-scale renovation.

The symbolism of an institution in transition may not be lost on the bankers and other experts who will gather there today for a colloquium in honour of Otmar Issing, the European Central Bank’s chief economist, who steps down in May.
