Brown on defensive after poll climbdown

Gordon Brown will seek to regain the political initiative this week with an extensive mini-budget following his humiliating retreat from an autumn election which his pollsters warned could see him return with a reduced majority of just 20.

The prime minister aborted Labour’s plans for a November election after private polls warned that his 66-seat majority would be cut. He said it was “unlikely” there would be a poll now before 2009.
