Blackstone executives tried to put a positive spin on their $340m third-quarter loss, which was three times greater than that of a year ago.

Relative to some competitors and the market as a whole, Blackstone can argue that it is doing well. But that is not likely to appease either investors in its funds or shareholders who have seen Blackstone’s share price plummet to about a quarter of its peak price.
