From a top-floor conference room in Reykjavik’s Grand Hotel, the first snow of winter can be seen edging its way down the muddy-brown mountains and jagged black lava fields that encircle the low-rise Icelandic capital. In the distance, steam from a geothermal power plant merges into the low cloud, hinting at the powerful subterranean forces that shaped this rocky Atlantic outpost.
