Sir, The harsh criticisms from Gian Luca Clementi (Letters, March 20) of the article by John May and Jean-Pierre Guengant (“Africa's greatest challenge is to reduce fertility”, March 14) were based on a misleading characterisation of the inter-relationships between fertility and child mortality.
