Japan to be first Obama guest

The new US administration on Tuesday underscored the importance it places on the alliance between Washington and Tokyo by inviting Japan’s prime minister to the first summit of Barack Obama’s presidency.

Hillary Clinton, at the beginning of her first overseas trip since becoming ­secretary of state, went out of her way to reassure ­Japanese policymakers that the cross-Pacific partnership would remain a cornerstone of foreign policy under Mr Obama.
