German president attacks business

The German president’s spectacular attack on the banking profession reflects the broader feeling of contempt among German politicians towards bankers since the start of the subprime crisis.

In a magazine interview published on Thursday, Horst Köhler compared financiers to “alchemists”, accused them of “massive destruction of assets” and described global financial markets as “a monster” that urgently needed reining in.
