Strife nearer in NHS pay row

The prospect of industrial action this summer by hundreds of thousands of health workers moved closer yesterday after talks between public sector unions and NHS employers "broke up without any agreement on pay".

At the heart of the dispute is a 2.5 per cent offer, which the government proposes to pay in two stages making it worth only 1.9 per cent in the current financial year.
