Activists moving into mainstream

Shareholder activism has gained new heights of respectability this year as large, traditional fundmanagers join forces with specialist activist funds to promote change, particularly in Europe.

Research out today shows that activist investment managers - who put direct pressure on companies to improve their performance - deliver substantially higher returns. That comes just days after 3i, the oldest and largest private equity trust in the UK, said it was planning to launch an activist fund.
