Need to Know: The Royal College of Art has raised almost £700,000 towards its student award fund since 1994 with an annual and highly successful exhibition called Secret at which 2,000 hand-painted postcards are offered for sale at a uniform £35 each. The “secret” bit relates to the fact that only after buying a card and checking the signature on the back does the purchaser discover whether they have paid for the work of an accomplished amateur or that of a shining star of the art world firmament: past contributors include Tracey Emin, David Hockney and Damien Hirst.
