October still the cruellest month

October, a month crowned by Halloween, is a time when equity investors have often been spooked.

In both 1929 and 1987, the stock market crashed that month, while in October 1997 trading was halted when the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 10 per cent at one point and circuit breakers, introduced after the 1987 crash, were applied for the first and only time.
