Barclays' grave situation

If BP's decision to close its final salary pension scheme to new members drove a nail into the coffin of defined benefit pensions, Barclays' proposal to stop existing members contributing tips a shovelful of dirt into the grave.

The message to staff from John Varley, the bank's chief executive, is more than usually delicate in its wording. It's not surprising that he has to tread carefully.
