Hard work and loyalty bring Hadley his reward

If there is a lesson in the appointment of Stephen J. Hadley as President George W. Bush's national security adviser, it is that hard work, loyalty and time heal wounds in Washington.

In Mr Bush's first term, Mr Hadley, the deputy national security adviser, shouldered the blame for the 16 erroneous words in the State of the Union address that suggested Iraq had sought nuclear material in Niger.
