East and west fail to shake off differences

Soon after the Berlin Wall fell, Willy Brandt uttered his now famous maxim that "what belongs together, can now grow together".

Were the former German chancellor to board a train today from Frankfurt-am-Main in the west to Berlin in the east, he would probably be satisfied with the view from his carriage window.
