Championing an instrument and repertory that still occasionally suffers from its relative youth in the west may place a large burden on such petite shoulders, but one underestimates Yang Xuefei at one’s own risk. The Beijing-born, London-based guitarist has technique to burn and her appearances here in recent seasons have clearly focused on building audiences.

This is all for the good, since approaching Yang herself is something of a long-term proposition. It’s not that her playing lacks passion, though her Latin repertory in particular lowers the usual testosterone level. Rather, her lyrical gifts and clarity of articulation go precisely in the opposite direction, making the music seem much easier than it actually is. There’s also a problem of stage presence, where in many situations Yang almost appears to be hiding behind her instrument.
