The pound dropped to a five-week low against the dollar on Tuesday after a survey of the UK services sector added to the economic gloom.

The UK purchasing managers’ index fell from 52.1 in March to 50.4 in April, its weakest since March 2003 and well below consensus forecasts of 51.6. It also showed confidence in the sector at its lowest level since the terrorist attacks on the US in 2001.
