A short history of subterfuge

The practice of “phone-screwing” – obtaining information from the mobile phone of a celebrity, politician or some other target of journalistic investigation – has been a reliable weapon in the Fleet Street arsenal.

In its simplest form, it means dialling a mobile or fixed-line phone number, pushing the # key and entering a four-digit code.
